Animal Babies and Parents

Like humans, animal babies grow and change. There are ways animal babies are like their parents. But in other ways, they are different.

Activity: Alike and Not Alike

Draw a Venn diagram on a piece of paper. A Venn diagram is two circles with part of each circle crossing over the other. Look at the cow and her calves below. How are they the same? How are they different? Write your ideas in your Venn diagram.

  • Mother
  • Name: Cow
  • Age: 3 Years Old
  • Weight: 1,500 pounds
  • Eats: Hay, grass, and grain
  • Drinks: Water

  • Baby
  • Name: Calf
  • Age: 2 Months Old
  • Weight: 150 pounds
  • Eats: Nothing yet!*
  • Drinks: Milk and Water

*A calf will start to eat hay and grain when it is 3 or 4 months old.

Did You Know?

Holstein cows have spot patterns on their hides. Each cow has a different pattern. No two are the same!
